Having learned the shocking truth from Willard M. Romney earlier this year that I’m not even part of the middle class because, in his view, it only starts at $200,00 per year, I am left to wonder where I, and so many of us, fit in his view of American citizenry. Now, I was feeling pretty good about myself because I earn a nice sum of money every year running my own business, and my husband is a Federal commissioner at the top of the Federal pay scale. We don’t qualify for the middle class, though, according to Mr. Romney. We must be the working poor, right?
Now I’m wondering, since we’re voting for Obama, if we’re the entitled slackers to which he was referring when he addressed a group of his own backers and thought no one was listening. I’m a woman, so I’m wondering if women might be the 47% he believes is coasting on the backs of good people, you know, rich white men. Somehow, I don’t think that’s what he means completely either. My elderly mother does collect social security and uses Medicare to cut her medical expenses, so maybe he means people in their 80’s and 90’s. Yeah, maybe all those old folks who worked all of their lives and paid into Social Security with their payroll taxes should be viewed as slackers now that they’re too old and frail to cut timber or mine coal. They should be living on their family trusts. Any millionaire knows that.
And what about those lazy, entitled people of color? They’re all wefare queens, right, just like Condoleeza Rice and Oprah and Gayle King and Eugene Robinson. Oh, and all those Latino folks who keep our nation in groceries, tend our gardens, and take care of our children when they’re not busy becoming mayors of LA or San Antonio or governors of New Mexico. Lazy bastards.
My questing is this? Where does Willard see you and me in his grand scheme? How about our kids? He wants to cut education because he doesn’t think that everyone is entitled to education. He wants to cut the EPA because he doesn’t seem to think that everyone is entitled to clean air and water and safe food. I feel as if I was just demoted from citizen to serf. How about you?
